Done is better than perfect

Done is better than perfect

Done is better than perfect – and here's why you should embrace it.

You've probably experienced it:
You're working on something that's almost finished.
But then you think… “It could use a little more polishing.”

So you edit.
Doubt.
Go in circles.
And suddenly, it's much later than you planned – and what should have been finished today is still waiting.

It feels like it's about quality.
But often, it's just perfectionism taking over.

Perfection isn't always what you think it is

It sounds good, doesn't it? To strive for perfection.
But in practice, perfection is often just a pretty excuse.
To wait. To postpone. To not do it at all.

We tell ourselves that we “just need to make a few adjustments.”
But often it's about fear:
Fear of being judged.
Fear of failing.
Fear that it's not good enough.

And then… nothing happens.

Finished is better

There's a reason the phrase "Done is better than perfect" has stuck around for so long.

Because perfection rarely exists in reality.
It's a moving target that constantly shifts.

What's finished, however – that moves you forward.
It creates experience.
It provides feedback.
And most importantly: It opens the door to the next step.

Ask yourself: Is it good enough to help?

When you're wavering between polishing or hitting "send", try asking yourself instead:

  • Is this good enough to help someone?

  • Have I done my best – in the time I had?

  • Is it finished enough for me to move on?

If the answer is even remotely "yes" – then it's good enough.

Because you can always improve something later.
But you can't improve something you never finish.

It's not about being sloppy – but about daring

This isn't about sending half-baked things out into the world.
It's about daring to do something.
To say: "This might not be perfect – but it's useful."

And that's actually what creates results.

Because people don't notice the extra little adjustment you spent 3 hours on.
But they notice that you do something.
That you act.
That you move forward.

A gentle nudge for those of you who are stuck

Next time you're staring at something you're not quite daring to finish, remember this:

It's better to get it done – than to wait for it to feel perfect.

So hit "publish". Send the email. Share the idea. Finish it.

And remind yourself:
Done is better than perfect.
